On 3 October, ENVI Members held an exchange of views about the Plastics Treaty progress with the representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme and the European Commission.

In February 2022, at the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, a resolution was adopted to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, with the ambition to complete the negotiations by the end of 2024. Three exchanges of views with the UNEP and the Commission had taken place so far following the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) sessions. The fourth session (INC-4) took place from 23-29 April 2024 in Ottawa. UNEP and the Commission were invited to inform ENVI Members on the state of play of the negotiations before the fifth and last negotiating session (INC-5) scheduled for 25 November to 1 December 2024 in Busan, Republic of Korea.
